UNICEF PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT AHEAD OF MNCHW WEEK, 2023.
In preparation for the official flag-off of the 2023 optimized MNCHW (Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Week) in Anambra, select officials from UNICEF visited the Deputy Governor, Anambra State. The team, led by Nemat Hajeebhoy, Chief on Nutrition, UNICEF outlined the events which will feature in this year's outreach such as:
Providing folic acid supplements to nursing and pregnant mothers who are anaemic, Counselling affected parents on proper nutrition, Providing deworming commodities etc.
Ms. Hajeebhoy explained that about 1.1 million children under 5 years of age in the state, 700 thousand are anaemic and 150 thousand have stunted growth. These figures alongside the absence of a biannual marking of the event, precipitated the visit today.
Speaking at the meeting, His Excellency, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim affirmed the need for thorough education on proper nutrition in rural areas. Citing the initiative as a continuation of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) global initiative. He welcomed the team to Anambra and expressed his belief in the success of the outreach. "This is another chance to think of nutrition deeply" he said and assured them of the government's support.
Ms. Hajeebhoy went ahead to request the government's assistance in alerting the private sector to the need for this. The reason for this, is the vibrant private sector in the state which will, in turn, cement Anambra's place as the best in the South East.
Dr Ibezim agreed while pointing out that the Soludo government is determined to partner with relevant organisations to reduce mortality rates in the state. To do this, the government has introduced several programmes geared towards gaining the trust and engagement of Anambra people.
Also present at the event were:
Nkeiruka Enwelum - UNICEF Nutrition Office, Abuja
Ngọzi Onuora - Enugu Field Office, UNICEF
Dr Nnadozie - S.A, Medicine & Pharmaceuticals
Dr Afam Obidike - Commissioner for Health, Anambra State
